My Kitchen is a Lab
The Smithsonian/NSI crystal kit is available at toy stores, supercenters, online... practically everywhere! When you open the box you see a checklist of materials contained in the kit, which include labeled single-use packages to perform several crystal experiments. The experiments may be conducted in any order. Make sure to use boiling water, not hot tap water. This will ensure that the chemicals will fully dissolve so you can grow large crystals rather than a mass of small crystals. Crystal growth requires minutes to days, depending on the experiment you select and your desired results. Overall toxicity of the chemicals is fairly low, but the chemicals should be kept out of the reach of young children. Adult supervision is required to manage the boiling water and to ensure good clean-up. The set includes crystal growing chemicals, growing cups, rocks (crystal bases), casting compound (to form 'geodes'), safety glasses, display pedestals, an instruction manual, and literature about the Smithsonian Institute. Chemical refills are available. Recommended for ages 10+
